I am a painter. I am enchanted to be a painter. I discovered painting late, after more than 20 years as a computer developer and project manager.
This is a journal of my painting as it unfolds including differents stages in the painting process from sketch to finished painting.

Gazing up - progress

Still temporary title, if a bit better than yesterday.

Slowly building up the tones, in fairly thin paint for the time, and sclupting the hair a bit.
So far managing not to go too tight.

Necky Woman looking up - Painting process

Just a provisional title for the painting I started this week.

Below is my painting broken down into a few snapshots.

The painting is oil on acrylic base on linen canvas 50 x 70 cm.

A few words on the process:

In the first snap I have put down two layers of acrylic, first red and then green. Why did I choose those colors? Difficult to give a very rational reason. The original subject in the photograph was outside with trees in the background - that gives green, and red is a complement to green and so vibrates with it. When putting on the green I painted loosely leaving large spaces to let the red show through. I don't know how much of the under coat will be left visible at the end, but at the least it serves to stimulate me with the color interaction and the texture.

In the second snap, after transferring my drawing to the canvas, I painted the broad outlines, still in acrylic. Those two snaps are from the first day.

The third and fourth snaps, on the second day,  show the colors beginning to block in and the light and shade beginning to show up, this time in alkyd oil - it will be dry by tomorrow.

As ever I will exert myself to try and retain the freshness which comes easily with the first coats of paint, but gets more difficult as the painting comes closer to the finish.

A painting is a moving target.

Shout - session 6

I'm considering using this painting to illustrate what an oil spill can do. Saw a few photographs of the most recent one that impressed me.

Scaling up a shout - Sessions 2 & 3

Here is the progress on the painting; getting some character in the shout, letting the colors come fairly instictively or by impulse.

Good feeleing so far.

Scaling up a shout!

Once again, I decided to take one of my daily sketches and paint it much larger than the original. This time It's 80 x 60 cm (approx 31x 23 inches) and again it is the depiction of an expressed emotion, and, yes it is again more or less a self portrait.

The shout is complete theater, but looks convincing.

So I put on a coat of light blue in acrylic and transferred my sketch.

It is based on this sketch

Hopefully some paint goes on tomorrow.

Scaling up a Laugh - Session 4

Getting close to the finish on this one. I'm getting the expression of explosive joy.

I included a wide view to give an impression of the size of the canvas.

Scaling up a laugh - session 3

The painting is now beginning to flesh out, as it were.

I had no idea that these were the colors I was going to use, they just emerged as I painted, but they were the colors I wanted.

It is going to stay in the same rough style but probably another two or three sessions needed.

Getting some color and joy now...

Scaling up a Laugh

While finishing the 'Summer Market' painting (see previous post), I started a new painting possibly titled  'Laugh' . It is based on a charcoal drawing which I include below.  The foundation (washed out blue-red) layer was done in acrylics, on this I sketched the lines with charcoal pencil and now I have layed down a first layer in alkyd oils (dry in less than 24 hours).

The charcoal reference approx 16 x 14 cm

The painting  60 x 50 cm

Dancer - Now and Later

This how my dancer is now. I am more or less happy with the background and composition, but the position and expression of the head does not satisfy me.

I played around in photoshop on the photograph of my painting to see what I wanted to change.

The painting as it is now:

Detail of head now:

And how I am thinking of changing it:
head slightly more tilted forward and eyes looking down a bit more.

To Sleep

This one is finished now. I should oil it down and re-photograph to deepen the darks and then varnish.

Yet another session its getting close to satisfying me. As often hesitation sets in as to leaving a raw look or tweaking further.

Who am I? - 4

Another session on this painting. Probably a bit more work to do.

I will put up a step by step post when I'm finished.
